An intra-uterine device (IUD) is a highly reliable form of contraception that can be used while breastfeeding. We offer IUD insertion from 10-12 weeks postpartum as one of our services. The types of IUD are the copper IUD and the hormonal IUD.
Copper IUD
A copper IUD is a hormone-free contraceptive that gradually releases a small amount of copper. Copper immobilises the sperm that enter the uterus and makes them inactive so that fertilisation does not take place. Contrary to what was previously thought, a copper IUD does not cause an abortion. A copper IUD can also be used as emergency (morning-after) contraception when inserted within five days of unprotected sex. This is because it causes the lining of the uterus (endometrium) to become unsuitable for the implantation of a fertilised egg.
The T-safe copper IUD is highly reliable and has been approved for use for up to 10 years. Of course, the T-safe can also be used for shorter periods of time, for example between two pregnancies. It is important to know that periods can be heavier with a copper IUD, and therefore you could experience more bleeding and cramping. T-safe costs €69.
Hormonal IUD
A hormonal IUD contains progestogen which it gradually secretes in a low dose to the uterine wall. It ensures that cervical mucus becomes ‘thicker’, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through. In addition, ovulation is sometimes suppressed and the endometrium becomes unsuitable for the implantation of a potential fertilised egg.
The hormonal IUDs Mirena and Kyleena are very reliable and both are approved for use for up to 5 years. Of course, you can also use a hormonal IUD for shorter periods of time. It is important to know that your periods could change or stop completely while using a hormonal IUD. Kyleena releases an even lower dose of hormone and is smaller than Mirena, but is just as effective in preventing pregnancy. Some women experience side effects with hormonal birth control, such as headache, changes in mood, spotting, acne, etc. Most women either do not experience side effects or only to a limited degree. Both cost €150.
Costs
If you do not have additional coverage through your insurance, you may need to pay for the cost of the IUD and its insertion. Check with your insurance provider to learn if you are covered. The insertion of an IUD costs €73,35. Following the insertion of the IUD, the position will be checked with an ultrasound. We offer this at no charge.
